Yah remains in the first grade this year. She shared that she is making gradual progress and enjoys reading, especially telling stories. Yah feels very happy to be back in school and said Girl Power Africa helps her continue her education by paying her school fees. She lives with her mother and helps at home with cooking and cleaning. Yah shared that since her father’s passing it has been difficult for her family to keep all the children in school. Her goal is to study hard, improve her reading, and one day support her community. Note to Sponsor:
This year in Liberia, many public schools conducted a reassessment of students. Based on the results, some children—including your sponsored student—were placed in a lower grade or asked to repeat a grade to better match their current learning level. This adjustment is not due to any wrongdoing or lack of effort—it is simply to ensure they are in the grade where they can learn, grow, and succeed with confidence. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Yah was promoted to the first grade this year, but unfortunately, she did not pass and has to repeat the class. She lives with her mother, who became seriously ill during the school year, and Yah had to stay home to care for her. For about a month and a half, and then off and on throughout the school year, Yah was unable to attend school regularly, which affected her ability to complete her studies. Despite the challenges she faced at home, Yah’s teachers have said that she is a very good student, and they are glad to have her back in school. Yah told us that her favorite subject is spelling, and she has made a promise that she will work hard this year and pass her grade. We believe in her determination, and we are excited to see her succeed in the coming year.. Sponsored by: Joyce Jorgensen

Thanks to the generous donation from Joyce Jorgensen, Yah has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. She received an incomplete for the 2020/2021 school year. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology in the schools, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level for the 2021/2022 school year. Yah was kept in her current grade level of K-1 grade for the upcoming school year. She continues to live with her mother and still wants to be a pastor when she grows up.

Meet Yah, who has been generously sponsored by Joyce Jorgensen on behalf of the estate of Dennis Valstad. She is 8 years old and is in the K-1 grade this year. She lives in Sopea, Liberia with her mother. Her father died of a suspected stroke a few years ago. He was complaining of pains in his hand and he died the following day. Her interests are to preach the gospel and sing and she hopes to be a pastor when she grows up.
