Josephine is repeating 1st grade this year after facing challenges last school year due to her father’s illness. Because she was unable to attend school regularly, she fell behind academically and did not pass her end-of-year assessments. Repeating 1st grade will help ensure she builds a strong foundation for future learning. Josephine remains a cheerful and eager student who enjoys being in school and continues to show excitement about learning. With consistent attendance and support this year, she is working hard to strengthen her academic skills and regain confidence. Josephine is a cheerful and eager 11-year-old who has been promoted to the 1st grade this year. She loves school and is excited to continue learning. Outside of the classroom, Josephine enjoys her favorite food, rice with pepper soup, which brings her comfort and joy. Josephine was promoted to Kindergarten-2! This year, she was able to get extra assistance and tutoring to ensure she passed. We are proud of her hard work and dedication. Thanks to the generous donation from Nancy Kokkonen, Josephine has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. She received an incomplete for the 2020/2021 school year.  Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology in the schools, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level for the 2021/2022 school year. Josephine was kept in her current grade level of K-1 for the upcoming school year. She continues to live with her father and still wants to be a beautician when she grows up.

Meet Josephine, who has been generously sponsored by Nancy Kokkonen – Thrivent. She is 7 years old and is in the K-1 this year. She lives in Boapea, Liberia with her father. Her mother died in childbirth. The father is unable to secure a job to get money to feed his family. Her interests are playing with friends and she hopes to be a beautician when she grows up.
