AMELIA: E430-LIA

JUNE 2022:  The Liberian saying “Where there’s life, there’s hope.” is what gives
43-year-old Amelia the courage and hope to look ahead to brighter days.  Two
types of marriage are lawful in Liberia: traditional marriage and “Christian”
marriage. Traditional marriage allows the lawful, traditionally recognized custom
to dowry multiple wives and Amelia is one of two wives in her household.  She has
three children and her “mate” has five children. There are also four extended
family members in their household. Amelia, her mate and her husband do
subsistence farming to provide for their large family.  Amelia’s resourcefulness led
her to seek out ways to strengthen her ability to support her children.  Girl Power
provides sponsorship for two of Amelia’s children to go to school and Amelia
recently received a farming supplies Empowerment Package.  Thanks Lori Fischer
