EVELYN: S52-NEW

November 2023: Ten-year-old Evelyn is edging closer to realizing her dream of becoming a nurse one day. Unfortunately, her education was interrupted when her cousin took her out of school for a year to assist with family needs, a common practice in Liberia, particularly for female students. This interruption can range from a few days to months, years, or even permanently. Despite this setback, Evelyn is currently in second grade this school year and still resides with her cousin.

September 2021: Thanks to the generous donation from Patty Glennon, Evelyn has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. She received an incomplete for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology in the schools, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level for the 2021-2022 school year. Evelyn was kept in her current grade level of K2 grade for the upcoming school year. She continues to live with her her cousin and still wants to be a nurse when she grows up. 

September 2020: In 2019, Evelyn was given to another family member. She is back with her aunt and she came to Girl Power for assistance to go to school for the 2020-2021 school year. Thanks to the generous donation from Patty Glennon, Evelyn has been re-enrolled into school for the 2020/2021 school year. She is in the K-2 grade this year.  She now wants to be a nurse when she grows up.

June 2019: We are pleased to announce that Evelyn was promoted from ABC to K1 this year. Michelle, thank you for your sponsorship and giving your student a gift of education.

2018:  Meet Evelyn Korto, who has been generously sponsored by Michelle Jones Larson. She is 5 years old and is going to school for the first time. She lives in New Yekepa, Liberia with her aunt. Last year, Evelyn’s mother passed away while in delivery with a baby. About 6 months ago, Evelyn’s father abandoned her and have not been heard from. Evelyn’s aunt took her to into her home to help raise. Unfortunately, the aunt is unemployed with 6 children of her own and could not afford to send her to school. Evelyn’s interests are helping her aunt cook and she hopes to be a teacher when she grows up.
