OTIS: S217-SAN

2023

Otis’s promotion to the sixth grade comes amidst one of the most difficult periods of his life. The tragic loss of his beloved little sister, who was his constant companion and source of joy, has left him shattered. During the school registration by Girl Power Africa, Otis arrived early, sitting alone on a bench with a heavy heart. Our founder approached him, recognizing his sadness, and upon learning of his sister’s passing, they shared a poignant moment of sorrow, embracing in their grief. Otis expressed, “She’s supposed to be right here with me, getting our uniforms together like we do every year.”

This heartbreaking loss compounds the pain of losing his father, further deepening Otis’s suffering. Despite these immense challenges, he remains resilient, continuing to reside with his mother and holding onto his dream of becoming a doctor one day. As Otis navigates through this difficult time, let us keep him in our thoughts and prayers, offering support and strength during his journey of healing.

Otis was promoted to the Kindergarten-2! Oftentimes, in Liberia, when parents are emotionally and/or financially unable to address the care of a child the family members are saddled with the responsibility of raising the child. This was the case with Otis. He was given to his aunt, who lives out of town, to support him as his mom is having difficulties providing for her and her children. However, after a few months he was homesick and missed his sister so badly that he came back to his mom. He told us, “he would rather not eat some days than live far away from his sister”. Meet Otis, who has been generously sponsored by Bob and Julie Lyons-Speropulos. He is 7 years old and is in kindergarten-1 this year.  He lives in Sanniquellie, Liberia with his mother. Since the death of Otis’ father 2 years ago, his unemployed mother has been struggling to  provide much beyond the basics for living: food and shelter. She is unable to afford school. Otis loves his sister and she is always by his side. His interests are playing with his sister and he hopes to be a doctor when he grows up.
