Helena was retained in 1st grade.  We are not sure why she was retained but we are certain that she deserves another chance.  GPA supports second chances for our sponsored students who survive and thrive in the face of challenged livelihood circumstances.  She still wants to be a business woman one day. Sponsored by: Collen Hansen

Helena was retained in ABC due to inconsistent attendance. Helena and her brother, Otis, are “attached at the hip” since she was born. Her big brother loves and protects her and they do everything together. Oftentimes, in Liberia, when parents are emotionally and/or financially unable to address the care of a child the family members are have the responsibility of raising the child. This was the case with Otis. He was given to his aunt, who lives out of town, to support him as his mom is having difficulties providing for her and her children. This seperation brought little Helena into a deep depression, which caused her to miss school often. But we are happy to announce that Otis has returned back to his sister and mother and they are all living together again. Helena was beaming with joy at our interview and very excited for school.

Meet Helena, who has been generously sponsored by Bob and Julie Lyons-Speropulos. She is 5 years old and is going to school for the first time this year, in ABC.  She lives in Sanniquellie, Liberia with her mother. Since the death of Helena’s father 2 years ago, her unemployed mother has been struggling to support her and her family and couldn’t afford to send her children to school. Helena’s interests are playing with her brother, and she hopes to be a business woman when she grows up.
