Marthaline is now 13 years old and has returned to live with her grandmother after spending time with another family. She had previously been sent to live elsewhere because her grandmother was struggling to provide enough food for the household. Unfortunately, the family she stayed with was unable to send her to school, which interrupted her education. Wanting very much to continue learning, Marthaline came back to her grandmother despite the hardships and asked for help so she could return to school. This year, she has started attending school again and is extremely grateful for the opportunity to continue her education. Marthaline still holds onto her dream of becoming a teacher one day. Her desire to be in school, even during difficult circumstances, shows her determination and hope for a better future. With support, she now has the chance to focus on her studies and move forward with confidence. Sponsored by: Phil Vasby

Thanks to the generous donation from Joyce Jorgensen, Marthaline has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. She received an incomplete for the 2020/2021 school year. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology in the schools, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level for the 2021/2022 school year. Marthaline was kept in her current grade level of K-1 grade for the upcoming school year. She continues to live with her grandmother and still wants to be a teacher when she grows up.

Meet Marthaline, who has been generously sponsored by Joyce Jorgensen on behalf of the estate of Dennis Valstad. She is 8 years old and is in the K-1 grade this year. She lives in Sehyi Geh, Liberia with her grandmother. Marthaline’s mother died in childbirth 3 years ago. After her death, Marthaline’s grandmother took all 4 of her grandchildren to raise. Unfortunately, the grandmother is unemployed and is finding it diffitcult to support she and the 4 children. Her interests are cooking and she hopes to be a teacher when she grows up.
