Seventeen-year-old Marcus beamed with pride as he announced his promotion to ninth grade during our GPA registration. His journey had been filled with challenges that could have easily deterred him, but he refused to give up on himself and his supporters. Despite these challenges, his dream of becoming a teacher served as his guiding light, motivating him to strive for excellence even in the face of adversity. He continues to live with his uncle. Marcus was retained in 8th grade.  It was reported that he had excessive absences from school due to excessive work at home.  His teachers had a conference with Marcus’ uncle to encourage him to allow Marcus time to go to school and do his homework. In spite of all these challenges, he loves playing football and his favorite subject is geography.  He still wants to be a teacher one day and continues to live with his uncle. Meet Marcus, who has been generously sponsored by Big Valley Ranch. He is 13 years old and in the 6th grade this year. Marcus lives in Vehyipa, Liberia with his uncle.  Marcus’ mother has 10 children with 6 men. She could not afford to take care of all of her children. She had given Marcus to his uncle to raise. The uncle too has children of his own and could not afford to send Marcus to school on a regular basis. Marcus is a very smart boy who has received double promotion twice since he’s been going to school.  His interests are helping his mom and he hopes to be a teacher when he grows up.
