January 2024: Alicial is a thirty two year old mother of six children.  She explained her parents allowed a customary marriage with her and an older man when she was a child.  In Liberia’s extremely rural communities, this customary marriage is acceptable.  The child grows up in the man’s household and when she becomes of age (fifteen or so), she is expected to fulfill all “wifely duties”.  Alicial’s first child was born when she was 16.  Her husband is very old now and can no longer provide for his family.  Alicial must care for her husband and their children.  She is determined to ensure her children remain in school so their fate will not be like hers, but she needs more income to sustain their enrollment.  She was given a farming supplies package to expand her subsistence farming activities.
