BOAN: E458-GBL
June 2022: Boan is a fifty-five-year-old subsistence farming widow living in
Gbeleyee, Nimba County with her four children (ages 28 to10). The older children
help Boan with the farming activities. Boan’s husband passed away from malaria.
Though treatable with medications found in health centers, families in extreme
poverty like Boan’s find it challenging to acquire the funds to pay for public
transport to a health center and the cost of the medicine. Oftentimes, as in her
husband’s case, locally available herbal remedies are used to “treat” malaria and in
severe cases, if left untreated, malaria is fatal. A donation from the Girl Power
Africa General Fund has given Boan and her family a hand up.
