YEI: S165-SAN
November
2023
Yei has been promoted to the seventh grade, marking another step toward her ambition of becoming a doctor. At 14 years old, she is dedicated to her studies and to supporting her family. Before school, Yei rises early to fetch water from the well, ensuring there is enough for her siblings’ bath and the family’s daily needs. After school, she takes on the responsibility of caring for her siblings and preparing dinner while her mother is at work.
Yei’s commitment to her education extends beyond the classroom. She eagerly absorbs knowledge in school, eager to share it with her siblings to help them succeed academically. Yei wants her siblings to be prepared for the challenges of seventh grade, just like her, emphasizing the importance of education in their lives.
Despite her responsibilities, Yei continues to reside with her mother, supported by her family and Girl Power Africa’s sponsor network as she pursues her dreams and contributes to the well-being of her household. Sponsored by: Ann De Broux

Thanks to the generous donation from Marina Blokhin, Yei has been re-enrolled in school for the 2021/2022 school year. She was promoted to the 5th grade this year and still wants to be a doctor when she grows up. With less than 500 doctors serving a population of 4.5 million people, Liberian households often experience fatalities due to treatable illnesses. Children aspiring to become doctors is a worthy cause. She continues to live with her mother.

2019
Thanks to the generous donation from Whitney & Nancy Van Vonderen, Yei has been re-enrolled into school for the 2019/2020 school year. We are sad to report that Yei’s father passed away 3 months ago from an infection. In some parts of Liberia, women, especially first daughters and wives, are known to shave off their heads when grieving their father, mother, husbands, and grandparent’s death, as a sign of respect to the dead and as a new beginning.
June 2019

Meet Yei, who has been generously sponsored by Mariah Hartley Solchenberger in honor of Amanda Tattoni, Mike Larson, Finn & Rory Solchenberger, Glenn Hartley, Grant Hartley and Barb Rambo-Hartley. Yei is 9 years old and in the 1st grade this year. She lives in Sanniquellie, Liberia with her mother. Yei and her siblings did not go to school last year because their mother is an unemployed single woman with 6 children and she could not afford to send her children to school. Her interests are playing with dolls and she hopes to be a doctor when she grows up.
