Eleven-year-old Lydia was promoted to the second grade! She worked very hard this year, balancing school with helping her grandmother by cooking, cleaning, and fetching water from a nearby well. Despite her many responsibilities, she is excelling both in and out of school. Lydia continues to live with her grandmother and dreams of becoming a nurse one day. We are so proud of her dedication and achievements! Sponsored by: Peggy & John Sundquist

Thanks to the generous donation from Keith Babler of Cascade Cheese, Lydia has been re-enrolled into school for the 2020/2021 school year. She is in the Kindergarten-1 grade this year and she continues to live with her grandmother. Lydia still wants to be a nurse when she grows up. Nurses and health care workers in general are sorely needed in Liberia where access to medical care is challenged by a limited number of health facilities and workers. GPA is honored to walk alongside Lydia and encourage her dream of becoming a nurse.Â

Meet Lydia, who has been generously sponsored by Keith Babler of Cascade Cheese. She is 7 years old and is going to school for the first time this year in ABC. Lydia lives in Sanniquellie, Liberia with her grandmother. Both of her parents have not been apart of Lydia’s life since birth because they were young when they had her. Lydia’s father had disowned the pregnancy and the mother had given Lydia to her grandmother pretty much right after birth. According to the grandmother, when Lydia was an infant, she would take her to other moms who were breastfeeding their infant for Lydia to be able to be fed because she could not afford to buy baby formula for Lydia. Lydia has been on the GPA school waiting list for one year. Her interests are helping her grandmother and she hopes to be a nurse when she grows up.
