Kou is now 10 years old and has been promoted to the 1st grade this year. She proudly shared that her favorite subject is spelling, a class where she enjoys learning new words and practicing how to write them correctly. Her teacher describes her as a very hardworking student who takes her lessons seriously and always tries her best in the classroom. After school, Kou’s responsibilities begin. She and her friends walk to the creek to draw water into buckets, carrying it back home so her family can cook, bathe, wash dishes, and clean. Once the evening chores are finished and the family has eaten, Kou prepares for bed, ready to start another busy day. Living in a small farming community with her parents and eight siblings, Kou understands the value of education and opportunity. Despite the challenges her family faces, her dream of becoming a teacher one day remains strong.
