John is 15 years old and remains in the fourth grade this year after a government assessment at his school found that he did not score high enough to be promoted. While he was able to retain his current grade, he was disappointed not to move forward. Despite this setback, John has resolved to work harder and improve his performance, even expressing his hope to achieve a double promotion in the near future. He told us, “I’m not getting any younger; I need to get my act together,” showing his determination and maturity. John continues to enjoy reading, a subject that inspires him and strengthens his academic growth. He remains deeply grateful for the support provided by Girl Power, which has transformed his life—from receiving new uniforms each year to having the opportunity to focus fully on his education. With his renewed commitment, John is motivated to overcome this challenge, improve his grades, and continue building a brighter future. Sponsored by: Sarah Mani

John was promoted to the 2nd grade class! John’s best subject is reading! He still wants to be a driver. John often visits the town “bus station” (an area of town where transport cars park and take passengers) and daydream about becoming a driver. His classroom performance is not as expected, and John is determined to improve during this school year. John’s favorite subject is reading, and he scored his highest mark in reading during the last school year. Sponsored by: Sarah Mani

Thanks to the generous donation from Sarah Mani, John has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. He received an incomplete for the 2020/2021 school year. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology in the schools, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level for the 2021/2022 school year. John was kept in his current grade level of 1st grade for the upcoming school year. He continues to live with his grandmother and still wants to be a driver when he grows up.

Meet John, who has been generously sponsored by an Anonymous donor (Mohamad). He is 9 years old and is in the 1st grade this year. He lives in Kialay, Liberia with his grandmother. His father denied the pregnancy so he’s not in his life and his mother is very sick with Malaria. His interests are transporting people and goods and he hopes to be a driver when he grows up.
