HELENA: S321-NEW
November
2023
Helena has been promoted to third grade, marking another milestone in her academic journey. At 12 years old, she finds solace in reading and actively contributes to her family’s livelihood by assisting her grandmother with cooking and selling goods in the market. Despite her responsibilities, she remains dedicated to her dream of becoming a nurse and continues to live with her grandmother.

Helena received a double promotion from kindergarten-2 to second grade. Her teachers reported Helena is “serious and willing to learn”. We celebrate the achievement of Helena and all our GPA students for giving school their best shot in spite of the many life obstacles standing in their way. Helena’s favorite subject is English. Thanks to the generous donation from Doris Keyes, Helena has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. She received an incomplete for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology in the schools, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level for the 2021-2022 school year. Helena was kept in her current grade level of K2 grade for the upcoming school year. She continues to live with her grandmother and still wants to be a nurse when she grows up.

Please meet Helena, who has been generously sponsored by Tina Hinchley and her family. She is 7 years old and is going to school for the first time this year in ABC. Helena lives in New Yekepa, Liberia with her grandmother. Both of Helena’s parents are disabled and are unable to work to care for their 3 children. She was given to her grandmother to help take care of her grandmother, who is partially disabled and needs assistance to walk.
