Nine-year-old Edith is in the first grade this year. She lives with her aunt, along with her five siblings. Edith’s mother had left for the diamond mines three years ago in hopes of finding work to support the family. However, since she left, the family has not heard from her, and they continue to hope for her safety and well-being. In the meantime, Edith’s aunt has taken on the responsibility of caring for all six children, but financial struggles have made it difficult to provide for them adequately.
