Anthony was promoted to the first grade this year, and he is already showing great promise. His favorite subject is spelling, and he takes pride in learning new words. According to his teacher, Anthony is a very good student who is always on time and eager to learn. After school, he goes home and helps his mom by drawing water from the nearby creek, a task he does with a sense of responsibility. Once the water is brought home, he helps her as she prepares the meal for the family. Anthony’s hardworking nature and dedication to both his studies and his family make him an admirable student. Seven-year-old Anthony is in kindergarten-1 class in Boapea Public School. He lives with his subsistence farming parents and three siblings. Anthony likes playing soccer (called football locally) with his friends. He wants to be a doctor one day. Providing for their family is a dignified struggle for Anthony’s parents. They tend to their farm six days a week. They are involved in local church and civic activities. They explained they cannot make enough money to provide for their family beyond food and shelter. Clothing, education, and healthcare are “iffy” areas that can wipe out a family’s meager savings. Anthony’s parents are thankful for the scholarship as they could not afford to put Anthony in school this year. Sponsored by: Donations from General Funds
