ALFRED: S205-LIA
October
2022
14-year-old Alfred is promoted to second grade. Liberia’s rural schools are filled with children who are not in age-appropriate grade levels. Alfred began school at ten years of age. Then COVID happened and delayed him for a year when schools were closed. Alfred is determined to do his best to get a “double promotion” at the end of the school year. Double promotions are given to students who are academically gifted beyond their grade level or, as in the case of Alfred, who have shown diligence and commitment in their struggle to catch up with their age-appropriate grade level. The gift of a scholarship is priceless. Sponsored by: Pam Albi

Thanks to the generous donation from Pam Albi, Alfred has been re-enrolled into school for the 2021/2022 school year. He received an incomplete for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, schools in Liberia had irregular school schedule. This combined with the lack of technology, some schools made the decision to keep students in their current grade level of 1st grade for the 2021-2022 school year. Alfred was kept in his current grade level for the upcoming school year. He is now living with his mother and now wants to be a police officer when he grows up.

Meet Alfred, who has been generously sponsored by an Anonymous Donor (CW). He is 10 years old and in the kindergarten-2 this year. Alfred lives in Liagbala, Liberia with his mother, who is an unemployed single mother with 6 children. The town chief told our Girl Power Africa team that Alfred and his siblings are lacking proper care from their mother because she has many children and is struggling to find food for them daily. Alfred told Girl Power: “I want to be a good citizen who will do good in life”. His dream is to be a medical doctor when he grows up.
