January 2024: Elizabeth is a fifty year old widow raising five children through subsistence farming.  She and her late husband constructed a house but because they were not legally, but customarily, married; her husband’s family took over the household as their own.  She and her children had to leave the home and fend for themselves.  She is determined to not allow this to happen to her children and works hard to send them to school.  Elizabeth desires to diversify her income by expanding her farming enterprise to include growing rice AND vegetables.
